You might be quietly wondering: what is Discord? Why do we want to use it? Why is it called Discord?
The simple answer is Discord is a multi-platform text, voice, and video chat application. This means you can use a desktop computer, a laptop, or a mobile device to talk to people within the IAKF community.
Here are a couple of videos that explain what Discord is to the communities who use it. (The Danny Devito one is worth a watch...)
Like any online platform, it all begins with an account. To register for your fancy new Discord account, click here.
Enter your preferred email address.
Enter your user name.
Create a password.
(Don't forget to write it down!)
Select your birthday.
(This is for Discord's age verification and not for IAKF.)
You can also choose to have them send you emails about the product but that is optional.
After you've entered in your information, the next step is to verify your email address. You should receive an email from Discord with a button you can click.
Once you have received the email, click the button to verify. You should see a pretty picture like this.
Discord is very keen on having people create communities. After the verification process it will want you to potentially create your own community so it pops a small window up to ask you to create your own Discord community. For now, we will skip over this part.
Click the small "X" in the top right corner of this window and it will close. You can always come back to this creation window.
Once you've verified and have completed your registration, you will find yourself with an overwhelming number of options. Let's talk about the applications you have the option to install.
Click here to see the downloadable options.
Discord has applications for Windows, MacOS, iOS, Android, and Linux. You can use Discord on pretty much anything -- and the best part is you can install it on multiple computers or mobile devices. You can have a text conversation on one computer and then switch to your mobile device to have an audio or video conversation. Discord is very flexible.
But, for the moment, let's talk about the web browser being the simplest way to get started.
If you're not interested with installing software to use Discord, you can always use your web browser. This is usually the simplest method to interact with people on Discord.
Here is what the typical interface looks like.
On the left hand side, is where you will see a listing of servers you belong and other options.
If you've never used Discord before, you will only see the blue home button but, if you join additional communities, you will see a listing of this here. You can jump between communities by clicking their server icon. You will always have a home button (the blue button with the Discord logo in it). The home button will always take you to your private messages and your account settings.
The next on this list, is the "plus sign" button. This is where you are offered the options to create your own servers (this is what we skipped over earlier).
The "compass" button is the search for public servers. Think of it as a place where you could search for public servers that allow anyone to join.
The "down arrow" button is where you can download Discord applications.
At the top of the screen, you will see your friends list, your private messages, and the help section. You can request to be someone's friend, add friends, review requests from others to be your friend, and create private chat channels. You can also block people that you don't wish to be friends with.
On the far right, you will see the question mark. This takes you to the Discord online help system.
And, finally, in the bottom left corner, you will see your account name (every account has a series of numbers after it), your audio settings, and you general settings icons.
You will see your microphone indicator, your headset/speaker indicator, and the gear icon. In the example above, you will note that the microphone has been disabled. You can turn your speakers/headsets and microphone off and on by clicking the icons.
And, finally, here is where you can join us and get access to our little community.
Hover your mouse over the user name in the bottom left corner of the web interface. You will see that it pops up a little message mentioning that if you click it, it will copy your user name.
After you have clicked it, you should see a message that says the user name was copied. Email that user name to info@kumonfranchisee.com and request to join the IAKF Discord Community.
We will then send you the invite link. All invites on Discord are a simple link that you can then click on to join!
If you forget your password, not to fret, you can still regain access! The first thing you need to do is to open up your browser, and head over here: https://discord.com/login
Enter in your email address and then click on Forgot Your Password. Discord will send you an email with instructions on how conduct the password reset.
That's it!
